Air Handlers
The air handling unit is an important part of your HVAC system. Located inside; usually in the garage, attic or closet, the air handler is responsible for circulating the conditioned air inside your house. It basically consists of a coil and a blower.
When matched with a heat pump, the air handling unit will both heat and cool. The heat pump provides heat until the outdoor temperatures get below 35-40 degrees. At that point electric heat strips inside the air handler come on to supplement the heat, and is sometimes referred to as emergency heat.
When an air handling unit is matched with an air conditioner, the electric heat strips inside the air handler provide the only heat from that system. If this is your only form of heat, you will have a higher electric bill than if you had a heat pump.
